Elder W. Rolfe Kerr, a Seventy, has been named Church Commissioner of Education. The DN article states: As church commissioner of education, Elder Kerr will direct operations of the church's higher-education institutions, including BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii and LDS Business College. He will also oversee the church's seminaries and institutes of religion. He will report to the church's board of education and board of trustees. The article notes he has a master's from USU and a doctorate from the U. An online bio adds the following details: He served in the military after his undergraduate education, then in an administrative position at USU. Later he completed a master's in marriage and family relations, then finally a doctorate in education.

I'm a bit surprised that he is not a long-time BYU insider. Maybe he can bring some refreshing ideas to the table. Time will tell.

The details in the article and bio are pretty sparse. I know that he was a VP of something-or-other at BYU for a number of years, so he does qualify for unofficial "BYU insider" status, I think. He seems like more of an organization guy than someone with a list of new ideas for the system.

This is good news. I have heard nothing but good things about Rolfe. He is very qualified. The only reason he didn't stay on longer as comissioner of higher ed for the state of Utah was that he accepted a mission call.
