There's a fascinating writeup over at Mormon Wasp about an African American (a Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, no less) who visited Salt Lake City in 1892. He was critical of the way African Americans were treated under LDS doctrine and cited the case of a black man who had reportedly been denied the privilege of taking a second wife some years earlier by Brigham Young himself. Don't you just hate it when that happens? Here all those 19th-century GAs were working so hard to set a good polygamous example for the stubbornly monogamist majority of Utah Saints, then here comes a guy volunteering to show how it's done and Brigham says no! Well, no wonder the institution failed so miserably, with leaders passing up such fine PR opportunities to promote the higher privileges of Mormonism. I'm confident that when polygamy comes back in ten or twelve years (1) it will be offered on an equal opportunity basis, and (2) the Get More Wives committee will put together some real nice television PR spots.
LOL. In 10-12 years, eh?

Can women serve on the "Get More Wives" committee? Would they?
