Conversion and marriage are very hot issues in Israel. Orthodox Judaism has a lot of power over these issues much to the dismay of other branches of Judaism. Those in Israel who want to obtain a secular/civil marriage have to leave the country to obtain that type of a legal marriage -- usually going to Cyprus.

It will be interesting to see if Orthodox Judaism will ever give up or lose its control over these issues in Israeli politics and law.

Reminds me of Russell Fox's joke re: if only Damon Linker would convert; he could get a tenured job teaching at BYU...

and that those that convert while at BYU get cheaper tuition.

although now...(in 2006) everyone will have to live w/in 2 miles of the BYU campus. hm...
