Dave, as I mentioned in my blog only North American (which will probably be just USA and Canada) area presidencies will be dissolved. Area presidencies outside of North america will continue to function.

Is this one of those changes in name only though? Perhaps they get rid of area presidents only to make seventies hold the same job. i.e. who does a mission president and a stake president report to?

I ask this since it seems like prior to the creation of the seventy the area presidents reported to the twelve. Then they created this extra layer of beaurocracy, with I believe area presidents sometimes being seventies. Now it seems like they are simply making things more like the old way.

I'm trying to figure out how this will change my big plan. j/k :)

Stake presidents and mission presidents, from my understanding, will report to the Presidency of the Seventy.

So that is a return to the way things were back in the early 70's. I'm surprised they will be able to do that since there are only seven presidents and a *lot* of stake presidents and mission presidents. I'll make a prediction that this doesn't last long.

Clark, the plan is not to remove members of the Quorums (Quora?) of the Seventy from the loop altogether, but to get rid of permanent longstanding assignments so that these GAs can be assigned as needed to areas, stakes, etc. needing specific attention. In essence, those GAs will become floaters instead of permanently attached to geography.

Here's a scenario for the "floaters": a Q3-70 (young, energetic member of the third quorum of the Seventy) gets on a plane, gets slipped a secret envelope from a passing attendant, and opens it to read: "Your mission, Elder So-and-So, should you choose to accept it, is to reform the California Suburban Hills Stake. You have 48 hours. Should your assignment be discovered, you and your operatives will be disavowed. Good luck."

Kim, yes I noticed it was just the North America (the grown-up Church) that was losing their Area Presidencies, I just didn't manage to slip it into my post.
